Alberto Dona

ALBERTO DONA

Alberto Dona was born in Italy in 1944. He began working in the glass field at age 13. He worked with various furnaces and masters and even had the opportunity to work with glass in Venezuela. His foremost influence was the maestro “Nane” Ferro, who was known in Murano during the 60’s as one of the best masters.

In the early ‘70’s Dona opened his own furnace. He became known for his skill with colors and his ability to invent unique color combinations. Most characteristic, however is the large size that Dona is able to achieve with his shapes. These qualities have attracted companies from Venini to Reflex to Saporiti, who have depended on Dona for glass accessories. By the end of the ‘80’s Dona’s talent also attracted many artists including the Santillanas, Lino Tagliapietra and Dale Chihuly, with whom he then collaborated.

In the same way Dona learned from older glass masters, he is now teaching and encouraging younger glassblowers. By having the younger glass artists working by his side and under his tutelage, Alberto Dona is lending his expertise to the continuation of the thousand-year tradition of glassmaking on the island of Murano.
