Hunt Slonem’s new portrait of President Lincoln feels a bit personal. Abraham Lincoln is more than a historical curiosity to Slonem, to the artist, there’s a kind of spiritual connection between the two men.
“I work with diviners and mystics…[Lincoln] guided me to paint certain things, like my doves, he wanted me to paint them as a symbol of freedom,” says Slonem.
“President Lincoln”, an oil on wood painting measuring 20 x 16 inches, is an eloquently simplistic rendition of the famed lawyer, statesman and president with its black and white pinstriped background reinforcing the iconic portrait.
Slonem paints President Lincoln with such piercing eyes that we are metaphysically drawn into the historical cannons of this great man and begin to see the presidential epitome of the American Dream.
“Lincoln was one of our greatest Presidents. He was a complete free-being and a great soul, and he changed American life in ways that were profound and wonderful. I am fascinated by who he is and who he continues to be in our popular culture,” he says.
